Swim Meet 101

SPAULDING FARM SWIM TEAM

SFST joined SAIL in 1994. We currently have about 100 swimmers on our swim team and about 25 Guppies on the Guppy team. Our swim team mission is to provide solid swimming instruction in a fun and encouraging team environment while leading kids to develop lifelong swimming skills and hopefully a lifelong love of swimming! But that’s not all… most swimmers say their favorite part of summer swim team is the fun social activities and seeing their friends every day!

SAIL

The Swim Association Invitational League, established in Greenville, SC in 1964 with four swim teams now consists of 31 neighborhood or club swim teams divided into six divisions (Red, Purple, White, Blue, Green, and Gold). Division placement is based on swim team size and Divisional Meet points.  SAIL's handbook, bylaws, technical rules, list of participating teams, history much more can all be accessed on the SAIL website. DUAL MEETS

Each SAIL team participates in five dual swim meets during the 10-week SAIL season (which is Mid-May through mid-July). Dual meets are scheduled with teams within each division and are not scored.  Kids are encouraged to have fun, work on technique and improve their times!  Events are run in order by age and gender.

DIVISIONALS

The swim season culminates with each division holding a Divisional Swim Meet.  All five teams in the division compete against one another in a two-day swim meet.  Typically the meet is split between a Friday evening and Saturday morning.  The points from this meet determine each team’s division placement for the next season.

CLASSICS & CHAMPIONSHIPS

The results from the six divisional meets are combined as if it were one meet to identify the fastest 40 swimmers in each event in each age group out of all of the SAIL teams. These top 40 swimmers in each event and age group compete in a county-wide meet: Classics (top 16 swimmers) and Championships (next fastest 24 swimmers) the weekend after Divisionals. The 16 fastest team relays also complete in C&C Weekend (top 8 in Classics; next fastest 8 in Championships). Spaulding Farm usually has about 40 swimmers participate in at least one C&C event!

After two weeks the coaches will evaluate each swimmers’ readiness to continue on the Guppy Team. Our main concern is for the safety of every swimmer.

YOUR FIRST SWIM MEET
Swim meets can take a few hours to complete so your child will have some downtime in-between their events. Swimmers will sit with their team in a designated area (At home meets SFST swimmers sit under the porch of the clubhouse).  Typically swimmers like to sit with their friends or other swimmers in their age group. We encourage swimmers to stay in the team area when they are not swimming.  The swim meet will move much smoother if the tent parents are able to find swimmers quickly while they are lining them up for their next event.

The heat sheet outlines the order of events and lists all swimmers by their heat and lane assignment.  They will not be available to purchase; however, emailed in advance prior to meet.

Every family is required to volunteer at each swim meet.  Swim meets require approximately 80 people to run smoothly.  There are many volunteer opportunities! Please refer to  Swim Meet Volunteers for job descriptions, training, and certification.
