Why can't I volunteer for a specific job?
Some jobs require training. If you have not completed SAIL online or classroom training you will not be allowed to select that position. But ANYONE can certified for ANY job so jump in!!
Is my SAIL certification valid from last season?
Each year volunteers are required to renew their SAIL certification.
Does someone from my family really have to volunteer at every swim meet?
Yes! Swim team is a volunteer led and run activity. It takes over 80 people to run each swim meet so we rely on the help of every family, some families have both parents working the whole meet, are paying babysitters etc! We are very understanding of special circumstances, please contact the volunteer coordinator if you have any questions! Many hands makes light work!
How many events can my child swim in a meet?
Swimmers may enter three individual events and two relays. Relays are generated from fastest times.
What happens if my child is Disqualified (DQ) during one of their events?
According to SAIL Technical Rules, “Meet officials are expected to notify the coach of a swimmer’s disqualification following their swim. During the first dual/triangular meet of the season, notice of disqualification for swimmers in the 8 and under age group is not expected, but the disqualification shall still be recorded.” SFST coaches will relay the reasons for disqualification during the meet or at practice the following week. Ribbons are not issued for disqualified events.
What happens if there is bad weather the day of a swim meet? Will we still swim?
Summer weather is extremely unpredictable! All meets will remain as scheduled. Please plan to arrive at the meet at the regularly scheduled time. Announcements will be made through the SwimTopia App.
To receive SwimTopia notifications download the SwimTopia App, log in to your SFST account, and make sure notifications are turned on.
In case of inclement weather, the referee and host pool lifeguards will make the decision about halting a meet in inclement weather. Starting or restarting a meet is determined by the referee, host pool lifeguards and each team's SAIL representatives.
Can anyone participate in the Division swim meet?
According to SAIL Technical Rules, “To participate in a Division Championship, a swimmer must have participated in two dual/triangular meets. If a swimmer is not able to participate due to weather or some other unforeseen circumstance that cancels a meet, meet participation will be counted if the swimmer was present prior to their event and was ready to swim. Written verification will be required from the swimmer’s coach and all SAIL Reps of the participating teams.”
What happens during Divisional Week to make it so special?
SAIL is comprised of Six Divisions: Red, Purple, White, Blue, Green and Gold.
The teams in each division compete during the divisional swim meet for the following:
1) Metcalf Trophy - Most points earned by their team in their division
2) Founders Cup- Quality points which is calculated by taking the team's total points divided by the number of swimmers.
The results of all division swim meets are combined to identify the fastest 40 swimmers in each event. These top swimmers then compete in Classics (top 16 swimmers) and Championships (next fastest 24 swimmers).
Divisional week is packed with activities and events to get the swimmers excited about the Division Swim Meet. The swimmers' favorite activities are the annual dodge ball tournament, shaving cream war, scavenger hunt, and pasta pump-up dinner. We conclude the week with our annual Trophy Party and announce our Championship and Classic swimmers.
Is the Division Swim meet important?
Yes! We need all swimmers to contribute to winning both the Metcalf Trophy and Founders Cup! The division swim meet also determines a team's division placement for the next season.
According to SAIL Technical Rules, "the finish order of SAIL teams will be based on points assigned to the top 60 times in each event, considering all results in all division meets. Points are given to these places with 60 points going to first, 59 to the second, etc...This results in a team point total that is then ranked by total value."
SFST hopes that all of our swimmers can contribute to the team division placement!
What is the guppy assessment?
An assessment is taken of all guppy swimmers after the first week of practice. The assessment is administered to ensure that each swimmer can swim on their own. Guppy swimmers can use any means of swimming at the beginning of the season to pass the assessment. Ultimately, our goal is to protect the safety of our swimmers! All team fees will be refunded if your swimmer does not pass the assessment.
Can guppy swimmers participate in big team meets?
Our coaches love to see our youngest swimmers advance in their swimming! Our goal is for them to compete with the older swimmers as soon as they are ready. Guppy swimmers that can independently swim a length of the pool in freestyle will be invited to participate in that event in one of the last meets of the season. The coaches will evaluate all swimmers let you know if your swimmer is ready to move up. Don't hesitate to ask the coaching staff for an update on how your child is progressing!
Can guppy swimmers participate in Divisionals?
Similar to our older swimmers, guppy swimmers must participate in two regular-season dual meets.
We encourage all guppy swimmers to participate in the social activities that occur during Divisional Week!
Can I swim in Championships and Classics without swimming in Divisionals?
No! Eligibility for Championships and Classics is based on participation in the Division swim meet.
Why do I have to fill out the SAIL Intent to Swim form?
Each swimmer must make a declaration of their intent to swim in Championships and Classics (assuming they qualify).
How can I get more involved in SFST?
Our swim team is a volunteer run organization, and we rely on our parents to support the team! We need individuals to help with social events and swim meets. All volunteer opportunities are listed on our team calendar per event. Please contact SFST if we can utilize your talents in any way!
